Responses to Isocapnic Hypoxia in a Hot Work Environment Differ in Younger and Older Males

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Climate change is impacting the health of the population, especially the elderly population. Michelozzi et al. (2009) emphasize that high temperatures increase respiratory-related hospital admissions, particularly in the elderly population, but the underlying mechanisms are poorly understood. The impact of extreme heat events on hospital admissions is expected to increase in European cities as a result of global warming and a progressively aging population [1]. In Denver, Colorado, higher temperatures were found to be an important factor in increasing the frequency of hospitalization for acute myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure in men and women over 65 years of age, reinforcing that this is a global issue [2].

Cerebrovascular and ventilatory responses to acute isocapnic hypoxia in healthy aging and lung disease: effect of vitamin C.
Acute hypoxia increases cerebral blood flow (CBF) and ventilation (V̇e). It is unknown if these responses are impacted with normal aging, or in patients with enhanced oxidative stress, such as (COPD). The purpose of the study was to 1) investigate the effects of aging and COPD on the cerebrovascular and ventilatory responses to acute hypoxia, and 2) to assess the effect of vitamin C on these res...

Outside of Western contexts, natural-conversation-based research on intergenerational communication is relatively rare. To help redress this imbalance, this paper explores the conversational styles of first-encounter talks between five pairs of college students and older adults in Taiwan, and infers the interactional norms that underlie them. It is found that younger Taiwanese adults tend to ex...
متن کاملمانومتری مری در بیماران دچار دیسفاژی عملکردی: مقایسه بیماران پیر و جوان
Background : Aging is a universal process that results in physiologic decline of organ systems. The effect of aging on esophageal motor function and the level of functional decline that could be responsible for symptoms are controversial. Dysphagia is a common symptom and is frequently blamed on "presbyesophagus" or considered the result of a stroke and therefore is not evaluated. Aim: The ai...
متن کاملHuman ventilatory response to CO2 after 8 h of isocapnic or poikilocapnic hypoxia.
During ventilatory acclimatization to hypoxia (VAH), the relationship between ventilation (VE) and end-tidal PCO2 (PETCO2) changes. This study was designed to determine 1) whether these changes can be seen early in VAH and 2) if these changes are present, whether the responses differ between isocapnic and poikilocapnic exposures. Ten healthy volunteers were studied by using three 8-h exposures:...
متن کاملSustained isocapnic hypoxia suppresses the perception of the magnitude of inspiratory resistive loads.
The sensation of increased respiratory resistance or effort is likely to be important for the initiation of alerting or arousal responses, particularly in sleep. Hypoxia, through its central nervous system-depressant effects, may decrease the perceived magnitude of respiratory loads. To examine this, we measured the effect of isocapnic hypoxia on the ability of 10 normal, awake males (mean age ...
